Our Winning Year (So Far)

Winning made our life was crazy! From photo shoots to TV Studios in the space of 24 hours!

Winning made our life was crazy! From photo shoots to TV Studios in the space of 24 hours!

It may sound melodramatic, but it is true to say that on 24th of January 2019 our lives changed forever. That was the day that we achieved our dream and won the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Award and officially became UK’s No 1! This was only 7 months ago but, on the one hand, it has flown by and other the other it feels like half a lifetime ago!

As you can imagine, at first it felt like everything had changed. From the photo shoot straight after the award was announced to being live on This Morning the very next day it was all a wonderful whirlwind. We loved it all but honestly just could not wait to get back to Exmouth to celebrate with our staff and of course our customers too!

Serving our Fish & Chips to Hollywood stars on this morning was just crazy!

Celebrating was high on our list of priorities, after all it is not every day you get named the best in Britain (out of an estimated 10,500 fish & chips shops) and what better way to kick off the festivities than using the free produce given to us by our suppliers to raise money for The New Deaf Academy in Exmouth? Of course, we could have just sold that product and kept the cash, but we wanted to share our good fortune with a good cause.

Think I might have been a bit over enthusiastic with the sponge! Is that Tim in the stocks??

Fortunately raising money and giving things away is great fun too so we continued our efforts on National Fish and Chip Day when we had our own Pay it Forward campaign when we asked our customers to select a local charity for us to donate money to! And we did not stop there! We also supplied free food to the elderly and the homeless in Exmouth and then in July we took the unusual step of closing the shop for a whole day (our first day off since we won in January) so our whole team could take part in the Exmouth Colour Bomb Challenge, once again raising money for The New Deaf Academy (and letting off a little steam along the way – I think I might have been a bit over zealous with the sponge throwing)! Overall, we are delighted to say that, so far in our winning year of 2019, we have raised over £12,000 for various charities and we don’t intend to stop yet!

Raising money for the New Deaf Academy has been a genuine pleasure.

Of course it is not only the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Award we won this year but also the Exmouth Business Awards Customer Service of the Year Award sponsored by Taylor Wimpey. We are so delighted because we feel it has real meaning because it is not ‘judged’ but voted for by you, our customers. Thank you to each and everyone of you that voted, we are so honoured to have won this award as it is real recognition for our wonderful, hardworking team.

Winning the Exmouth Business Award for Customer Service was a honour as it was voted for by you our customers!

As holders of the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year we have also been asked to be involved in many industry events and often as guests of honor. It is a strange sensation to walk into a room of people, many of whom you know and have them all stand up and applaud you as you enter! These events have taken us all over Britain and, for Tim and Darren, to the Netherlands too. Krispies international odyssey does not stop there. In October Darren, our manager and Rob, our assistant manager are going to Japan for three weeks cook Krispies Fish & Chips in the Land of the Rising Sun! It’s going to hard work for them but it is also a very exciting opportunity and you will be hearing more about their adventures in our blog later this year.

One thing that hasn’t changed, and will not change, is us. We are still Mr & Mrs Krispie, whilst we love appearing on TV, being the guest of honor at industry dos and using our status to raise money for worthy causes our passion for Fish & Chips and our love of Exmouth remain the same and we like nothing more than being in our shop, cooking and serving the very best Fish & Chips.
