I think there a quite a few people in Exmouth that think Tim and I are a bit bonkers and our recent decision to have a holiday in Leeds with the primary aim of visiting as many fish and chips shops in the area as we could did nothing to allay reputation.
So, it’s true, on a not so sunny day in July we packed our bags (leaving the factor 50 and the sun hats at home) and headed up North for what can only be described as a Fishman’s Holiday.
Our plan was to use Leeds as our base and strike out for day trips from there and so it was, after driving through some of the most beautiful countryside in England we found ourselves in Whitby. We had never been to this lovely seaside town before and it was bustling when we arrived and as always it had the typical British summer weather to go with it, pouring with rain when we arrived and burning sunshine when we left! What I love about the British though is we are never beaten and when at the seaside we must eat fish and chips whatever the weather and that was true in Whitby as it is for Exmouth!
Our main aim of coming here was to visit Quayside, a family run shop that had won the National Fish & Chip awards in 2014. The shop looks stunning from the outside and the Frusco family were generous in taking time out of their busy schedule to show us round the shop. We then tucked into fishcake and haddock for lunch, they were excellent! Whitby was only one venue on our list and we managed to visit eight shops in total including the shop which was once the very famous Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley.
Everyone we went to see was so welcoming and generous with their time, we are really lucky to work in an industry where there is so much respect and friendship between people who are essentially competitors.
And so it was that we returned home, happy and inspired by the people we had met and the food we had eaten. And boy did we eat a lot of fish and chips so it was great to get back to the home comforts of – fish and chips. We did love it but you will be pleased to know our next holiday will be in Cyprus!
