Read Kelly's diary of the big charity event held on 27th February 2016:
It’s our big day! Today’s the day we sell 1,500 portions of Fish & Chips all in aid of Charity. We’ve been talking about it so long I cannot believe it is really here. Tim and I are pretty tense, it’s strange how setting yourself a target can make you nervous but over nerves comes the driving spirit to do what we do best, to Put Fish First and sell amazing Fish & Chips.
We arrive at the shop at 8.00am but Paul has been there since 6.00am cutting up over 60,000 chips! In fact, the prep started yesterday, we started to make up the 1,500 boxes we would need and Tim had started to cut up some of the portions of fish. However, the logistics of defrosting 1,500 portions were quite challenging and there’s fish everywhere – in the potato prep area, on the fish tables, anywhere there was space!
It’s all a bit quiet to begin with but at 9.00am the staff start to arrive, we decorate the shop and prep gets into full swing. Time is flying and by the time I have collected the t-shirts, the cake and the all important crowd control barriers it is 11.00am the press are here. Whilst we are having our photo taken a queue starts to form down the pavement outside the shop and I cannot tell you how excited we are to actually have people arrive. It’s cold for those waiting so on the dot of 11.30am we cut the ribbon and we are off!
It’s manic, there is no time to think, the queue never seems to get shorter and before we all know it it’s 1.30pm and we have sold 500 portions! Despite the cold trade remains brisk and people have come from all over Devon, Somerset and there was even a couple from Wales! Everyone is incredibly generous giving us their short change and often some notes too. It’s 4pm when we sell our 1,000 portions, it’s been a bit quieter in the middle of the afternoon but as teatime hits it all hot’s up again and at 6.00pm on the dot we sell our 1,500th portion! We did it! We reached our goal. There are still people in the queue so we serve them making it 1529 portions sold in total and by then we are literally all out of fish so we couldn’t sell any more even if we wanted to!
Here my favourite numbers from the day:
60,000 chips (that’s 2 tonnes of potatoes)
40 stone of fish
3 bags of batter
2 (extra) large bottles of Prosecco and
1 birthday cake!
But the most important number is £5,412.13 raised for Vranch House School in Exeter.
I want to thank all the people who came down to Krispies and bought Fish & Chips for Charity, all the trade suppliers that helped us out by supplying fish, potatoes, oil and batter all for free and also to all our staff who worked tirelessly, efficiently, cheerfully and most importantly for free.
